Concrete Things celebrates our ability to reevaluate narratives that no longer work for us through Lorraine Hansberry’s words
Miraculously, Concrete Things was released just weeks after the first lockdown of the COVID pandemic. At the time all of our PR began with the phrase ‘released in defiance of dark times’ which really seemed to resonate. This is still our most successful—and arguably most ambitious—track to date, having now exceeded 111,000 plays on both Spotify and Soundcloud (each).
Concrete Things celebrates our ability to reevaluate and reframe narratives that no longer serve us thereby enabling us to grow and thrive as human beings. This is summed up beautifully by Lorraine Hansberry’s quote that underpins the whole piece:
“I rather admire this human quality to make our own crutches as long as we need them. The only thing I’m saying is that once we can walk, you know, then drop them.”
The track has more layers and moving parts than anything else we’ve done yet somehow doesn’t feel overcrowded. There’s sunshine in it too, most likely due to the strong influence of Brasilian genius Arthur Verocai on both the songwriting and instrumentation. The balance of words and melodies also feels just right to us.
Whether it was these factors, the captive audiences of the lockdowns or some other magic this is the one track we’ve released that has reached the widest audience. Even if that was not the case we’d still regard it as our finest work.

“It’s been almost exactly a year since I first covered Fold. Seems like as good a time as any to pick up a new song, right? Concrete Things” comes as the band’s latest single, sampling Lorraine Hansberry, an African American playwright who passed away at the age of 34 back in 1965. The song’s structure and approach end up reminding me of The Avalanche’s “Frontier Psychiatrist,” though with a gentler approach than the former. I’ve listened to it about 20 times now, and I gotta say it’s managed to consistently hit the spot.”
“Concrete Things has been featured on Huey Morgan’s BBC 6Music show as his Beat of the Week. We have been longtime supporters of Fold and believe the socially conscious outfit are one of the most important bands out there currently so we highly recommend you check out this new single and their entire back catalogue.“
“We love Fold so news of new music from the Leeds outfit is something we’re always itching for. Earlier this week, they released a new track called ‘Concrete Things’, featuring vocal samples from groundbreaking African-American playwright, author and activist Lorraine Hansberry. Lifted from a wider concept album paying tribute to Hansberry, ‘Concrete Things’, as they explained, “exalt[s] the importance of using our cognitive gifts to steer ourselves towards the proverbial light.“
