Lorraine Hansberry was in an Insurgent Mood in 1959 and her perspective still resonates with great force today
Through the medium of hip hop this album opener delivers a revolutionary statement from Lorraine Hansberry made in 1959. She was living through a moment much like the present day in which new possibilities for extraordinary change presented themselves.
Our intention is to highlight the fact that what we’re seeing now is the result of a continuum of struggle that has lasted hundreds of years. Making structural changes will require a sustained effort from all of us. It also adds a crucial layer to Lorraine Hansberry’s achievements within the context of the album; not only as a writer but as an intellectual, visionary and activist.
As a further homage to the long struggle, the cover is a painting of Toussaint L’Ouverture: one the greatest revolutionaries of all time. The main focus of our work has always been to amplify the voices and perspectives of oppressed and marginalised peoples. We will continue to do so.

“Don’t let the mellow head-nod beat fool you – Leeds outfit, Fold, are in an insurgent mood. Cue another example of their stock-in-trade – which is to say, a bedrock of a richly orchestrated hip-hop beat topped with some incendiary spoken word plucked from history. In this case, it’s another outing for outspoken African-American playwright Lorraine Hansberry (the first African-American to have a play performed on Broadway back in 1959!) and some revolutionary words that are as apt now, as they were then.“
